How to Manage Stage Fright
To manage stage fright effectively, you must shift your body out of fight-or-flight mode and reframe your mental perspective right before stepping up to speak. Stage fright is a completely normal physiological reaction; the goal is not to eliminate the nervous energy, but to channel it into enthusiasm.
🧘 Physical Calming Techniques
- Belly breathe deeply: Inhale through your nose, expanding your stomach, and exhale slowly through your mouth to physically lower your heart rate.
- Release muscle tension: Clench your fists, jaw, and shoulders for five seconds, then consciously release them to drop physical stress.
- Warm up your face: Rub your cheeks, stretch your mouth, and make exaggerated facial expressions to loosen up your vocal muscles.
- Burn excess adrenaline: Take a quick walk, stretch, or shake out your hands in the restroom before your turn.
🧠Mental Reframing
- Focus on your audience: Remind yourself that you are there to deliver value to them, shifting attention away from your own anxiety.
- Acknowledge the adrenaline: Tell yourself, "My racing heart means my body is gearing up for a peak performance," instead of fighting the feeling.
- Visualize the finish line: Spend a few minutes imagining yourself delivering the final slide confidently and receiving positive feedback.
- Adopt a structural mindset: Memorise your opening line and core talking points, but do not rely on a word-for-word script.
🎤 Environmental Control
- Arrive 30 minutes early: Familiarise yourself with the podium, microphone, slide clicker, and room setup to eliminate surprises.
- Mingle with the audience: Chat casually with attendees as they arrive. This shatters the barrier between "speaker" and "crowd."
- Apply the two-second rule: When called to speak, walk up, look at the audience, breathe, and pause for two seconds before speaking.
- Limit caffeine and sugar: Avoid coffee or energy drinks for at least three hours before presenting to prevent worsening physical tremors.
